  • McKinney-Vento is a law that ensures easier school enrollment and education stability for any child or youth who may be experiencing unstable housing or homelessness. The purpose is to make sure your child can continue to thrive in school even in the face of housing uncertainty.

  • This just means that you are a student whose living situation is currently in transition and the person who you are living with is not your legal guardian. Maybe you are living with grandmother or a friend or on your own. You are eligible.

    The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law that provides important educational rights and services to PreK-12 children and youth experiencing homelessness. The U.S. Department of Education has published guidance to help state and local educational agencies implement the law. This document summarizes the McKinney-Vento Act’s key provisions and provides corresponding legal citations. 

  • “Homeless children and youth” means children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, including those who are sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason; staying in motels, trailer parks, or camp grounds due to the lack of an adequate alternative; staying in shelters or transitional housing; or sleeping in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, or similar settings. 

    “Unaccompanied youth” includes homeless children and youth who are not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian.
