Special Message from Dr. Booker (GLA)

Dear Friend of Global Academies:

I wanted to close out this year’s “Booker Blog” with a sincere, heartfelt word of gratitude to our partners who continued to support Global Academies throughout 2021. Your contributions have paid for learning opportunities and programs that we otherwise could not fund from the state subsidy.

The reason we fundraise is that we refuse to turn away any scholar from participating in excursions. Our challenge is that charter schools receive only 70 percent of the per-pupil allotment that school districts are paid. Not only do school districts retain 30 percent of the per-pupil allotment for each student who leaves a district school for a charter school—they keep 30 percent of the allotment from kindergarten children who never set foot in a district school and even for children who leave private schools for charter schools.

Because of that substantial deficit, it would be impossible to fully fund learning excursions for our K-8 scholars. But, your generosity has bridged that gap, and we have never had to turn away a scholar who could not afford excursion costs.
